Education Secretary Leonor Briones said, in a meeting on Monday, with President Rodrigo Duterte and Cabinet officials, that the proposed expansion of limited face-to-face classes would likely be in the first week of February if it pushes forward.

she said, noting that the agency would also still need to wait for the Department of Health's COVID-19 risk assessment for the Jan. 16 to 31 period.

She also said that areas placed under Alert Level 3 due to COVID-19 will not be included in the expansion as per existing rules and emphasized that the agreement of local government units and parents’ consent for the conduct of physical classes will remain a requirement.

Moreover, the DepEd chief said that only vaccinated teaching and non-teaching personnel will be allowed to participate while vaccinated learners would be preferred as participants.

According to her, the pilot run of face-to-face classes was “highly successful,” citing surveys conducted by the department. It ran from Nov. 15 to Dec. 22 and was participated by 287 schools from across the country.
