DepEd: Daily 1 GB data allowance plenty enough for online classes

The Department of Education (DepEd) said that the 1 GB data per day to access specific e-Learning and DepEd applications is an enough daily allocation for public school teachers to use.

According to our analytics consumption tests, the 1GB per day for 30 days is enough to access e-learning and whitelisted or zero-rated DepEd applications,

the Education department said.

It also added that the 1GB daily data can support 8 hours of video conferencing.

The statement which was released by DepEd on Wednesday, Oct. 3, was in response to some teachers who claimed that the 1 GB data is not enough to be used for online classes.

Under the DepEd's SIM Card and Connectivity Load Program, teachers are provided with SIM cards with 34GB connectivity load every month.

Meanwhile, Assistant Minority Leader and ACT Teachers party-list Representative France Castro pressed the Congress to fund P1, 500 monthly internet allowances for teachers.

He added that the urgent passage of House Bill 7034 or the Internet Allowance for Public School Teachers Act and the funding for the P1,500 monthly internet allowance for teachers in the 2022 national budget should also be a priority during the blended distance learning.

Teachers with the expired DepEd 349 SIM cards will no longer receive the 1GB daily data allowance and will be left with only the accumulated unused 4GB monthly data provision,

the Alliance of Concerned Teachers said.

The DepEd said it has proactively requested the Commission on Audit and the Department of Budget and Management in 2020 for the possibility of granting internet allowance in cash, which will require almost P18 billion in public funds.

Under the current budget of DepEd, there is no existing legal basis and fund cover for such 'monthly internet/connectivity allowance',

the DepEd said.
