He also confirmed that the Department of Health and DepEd has finished the guidelines for the pilot face-to-face classes in 100 schools situated in areas classified as low-risk for COVID-19.
Malaluan said that after passing the evaluation on readiness, there are 600 schools being considered for the conduct of the pilot face-to-face classes.
Only 100 will be chosen for the conduct of the pilot face-to -face classes out of the 600 schools that passed the evaluation.
He added that through the United Nations Children’s Fund or UNICEF aid, a dashboard has been set up by DepEd and DOH which will help the agencies monitor schools that are deemed to have low risk of COVID-19 transmission.
As the study requires representation from different islands nationwide, DepEd will choose several schools from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. However, the National Capital Region was not considered for the pilot classes due to the health situation in the area.
Malulaun also mentioned that the government has yet to vaccinate all public school teachers, given the current geographical prioritization policy. To address this, DepEd pushes for an institutional approach to vaccinate teachers who lives outside the NCR and other areas that were classified as priority for the government’s vaccination program.
The education department hopes that the guidelines for the pilot face-to-face classes will be discussed in the next Cabinet meeting for Duterte’s approval.
DepEd announced that the school year 2021-2022 will start on September 13.
