PNP chief personally apologizes over tarp specifying teachers as potential rapists

In a statement on Wednesday, July 7, the Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar apologized personally to teachers who were identified in a tarpaulin put up in Sorsogon City as potential rapists among others.

The tarpaulin was displayed in March by the Sorsogon City Police Station and the Sorsogon City Advisory Council as part of an information drive against sexual abuse.
While I fully understand that the intention of the information drive is noble, it is clearly discriminatory and insulting to our teachers who have been working hard especially in this time of pandemic,
the PNP Chief said.
For my part, I personally apologize to our teachers and you can hope that we will correct this mistake. May this incident serve as a lesson to our policemen to think carefully and be sensitive,
he added.

He also said that the Sorsogon City Police had already issued an apology to the incident and will be asked for an explanation about it.

Meanwhile, the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) criticized the tarpaulin saying that it was hurtful for educators to be branded as rapists whose main objectives are to teach and care for children.
TDC National Chairperson Benjo Basas said.

The group added that while they support the police’s campaign against harassment against women and children, it should not put any profession into bad light.

Romel Lleva, a principal in Sorsogon and also president of TDC-Bicol also condemned the actions of the Sorsogon City Police and the Sorsogon Advisory Council in setting an example for teachers as potential rapists and said that educators are entitled to high respect and upholds their dignity.
Inatasan ko na ang mga pulis na magpaliwanag kung bakit hindi sila dapat parusahan sa pagkakamaling ito,
Eleazar noted.

PNP Chief Eleazer hopes that this lapse in judgment on their part will not serve as a setback in the long-standing partnership of teachers and police officers towards a peaceful and responsible community.
