In a televised public briefing on Tuesday, June 15, Education Secretary Leonor Briones maintained that the Department of Education (DepEd) did not have any shortcomings in releasing the benefits of its teachers.

However, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) refuted Briones’ statement on public school teachers receiving their benefits on time and argued that it is a “blatant lie” as the agency is still heavily in debt to the educators.
Benefits delayed are benefits denied, and to say that teachers are receiving theirs on time is such a blatant lie. It is already hard enough for our teachers who must suffer the brunt of the government’s incompetence, the least the agency could do is own up and take responsibility for its shortcomings instead of lying,
responded by ACT Secretary general Raymond Basilio on Briones’ statement.
The ACT said that public school teachers waited for two years for their 2019 performance-based bonus (PBB) to be released, and that it took more than a year for the DepEd to comply with the requirements set by the Department of Budget and Management for its release, which was approved this week.
Because of DepEd’s delayed release of funds, most teachers were forced to shoulder their own communication expenses and module production.
According to ACT, other “debts” of the agency to the teachers include the promised P300 monthly communication expenses reimbursement for 2020, the grant of the P1,500 monthly allowance, 77 days service credit , and 25-percent overtime pay for their workdays in excess of the mandated 220 school days from June 1, 2020.
