The Department of Education (DepEd) confirmed on Thursday, June 4, that the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) approved the agency’s proposal to increase the compensation and benefits of teachers who will be serving as poll workers in the 2022 elections.

Earlier in February, the proposal was requested by Education Secretary Leonor Briones in response with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
According to DepEd, despite the two agencies agreeing with the proposal, the approval will still be up to the congress on the deliberation of the annual budget.
Given the current health situation, it is rightful for them to receive an additional allowance,
says Briones.
The following honoraria rates agreed upon by both of agencies includes: P9,000 for chairpersons, P8,000 for education board members, P7,000 for DepEd supervisor officials, and P5,000 for support staff.
DepEd added that COMELEC will also support the provision of food and transportation allowance along with clean-up and maintenance expenses as part of its budget proposal for the 2022 elections. Health-related expenses and health insurance coverage for those who would get infected due to the current risk posed by the COVID-19 pandemic are also included.
Other benefits such as on-site swab testing, shifting, and working hours of public school teachers, tax exemption, and any absence/transfer/leave of DepEd employees due to election-related incidents will still be examined by the two agencies.
