DOST Chief: ‘More than 670 teaching positions allotted by DepEd for DOST scholar-graduates’

Over 670 teaching positions have been allocated by the Department of Education (DepEd) for the scholar-graduates of the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) this school year (SY) 2021-2022.
For FY (Fiscal Year) 2021, a total of 674 teaching positions have been allocated by the Department of Education (DepEd) for the DOST scholar-graduates. These scholars are set to start their service by August or before the opening of classes,
DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña announced.

According to de la Peña, the DepEd has created 3,319 Special Science Teacher I (SST I) positions to cater the graduates of the Junior Level Science Scholarship under RA No. 10612 or the Fast-Tracked Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 2013 as of October 28, 2020, which covers the SY 2016-2017 until SY 2020-2021.

He also explained about RA No. 10612 which supports the implementation of the K-12 law by developing a pool of scholar-graduates who can competently teach science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in the secondary education, particularly in senior high school and ideally in their respective home regions.
The appointment of these scholars shall be on provisional status, under the condition that they must pass the LET within the first five years if they opt to continue teaching in DepEd after fulfilling their service obligation,
de la Peña said.

He added that the endorsement of scholars shall come from the DOST-SEI based on the actual number of graduates as of the end of the academic year.
