However, according to Dr. Salustiano Jimenez, director of DepEd-7, their recommendation will still depend on the approval of the DepEd central office and President Rodrigo Duterte.

Jimenez said the schools included in the first batch were already preparing for face-to-face classes but added that an announcement for the start of the school year has yet to be determined by DepEd central office.

The first batches that are ready to conduct face-to-face classes are parts of Cebu province, including the cities of Toledo, Bogo, and Carcar as well as portions of Negros Oriental, Bohol, and Siquijor. Cebu City will follow in the next batch.

The city’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) had been visiting barangays in the mountains which are least affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and were able to identify 12 barangays that are ready for face-to-face classes.

Councilor Joel Garganera, the deputy chief implementer of the EOC, said they shifted to assessing the mountain barangays if certain restrictions could be lifted there since COVID-19 cases have dropped in the city.
