The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) has urged the Department of Education to give school teachers just compensation on their proportional vacation pay (PVP), as they noted that public school teachers have been working for almost 10 months now without proper rest due to the adjusted school calendar.
The PVP is a leave benefit specifically granted to public school teachers after rendering 10 months of continuous service during a single school year in place of the mandated yearly 15-day sick leaves and 15-day vacation leaves for workers in public and private sectors.
The ACT has expressed their concern through a letter to Education Secretary Leonor Briones on March 30, remarking that the extension of the school year was a serious concern for teachers and that their duties under distance learning have been way burdensome when compared to their duties before the pandemic.
OTHER STORIES:
ACT secretary-general Raymond Basilio said that since the teachers have already been working for almost 10 months, their work can already be considered equivalent to their regular service in a common year which is succeeded by the summer vacation when teachers enjoy their PVP.
However, due to the extension of the school year 2021-2021 by DepEd, teachers may not be able to enjoy this benefit.
The current school calendar under distance learning, however, has set July 10, 2021, as the last day of classes, thereby requiring teachers to work for 14 straight months without any leave benefits,
he expressed.
He also added that DepEd’s full payment for the communication expense reimbursement and service recognition incentive for 2020 has not yet been received by numerous public school teachers.
