The Department of Education (DepEd) had extended the school year for basic education until July 10, 2021. The extension had been made to address learning gaps among students and give ample time to the teachers for the delivery of the different modalities.
However, ACT Teachers Partylist Rep. France Castro expressed her disagreement about the extension criticizing DepEd’s decision as extending the school year will just extend the suffering of learners, teachers, and parents alike.
Extending the school year without addressing the basic problems of the Duterte administration’s distance learning program would only extend the suffering and hardships of teachers, learners, and their parents,
Castro said in a statement.
If the DepEd genuinely wants to give learners academic ease, it would have provided adequate learning materials and prepared a curriculum that is appropriate for blended distance learning,
the teacher-lawmaker added.

She also advised that DepEd should take its stakeholders’ stance about the extension before implementing policies in order determine whether such policies are appropriate to the situation or not.
Additionally, Castro emphasized that the national government should have a comprehensible plan in conducting safe face-to-face classes learning in low risk areas and guarantee appropriate benefits and health protection to its education workers. It also should provide sufficient supplemental budget to provide for all teaching and learning resources needed in distance learning.
As long as the DepEd and the Duterte administration fails to make these basic concrete steps in education, there would be no genuine academic ease in education the government will continue to fail to provide our learners their right to safe, quality and accessible education for all,
she said.
