On Wednesday, March 3, Education Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio confirmed that the proposal to shorten the summer break into 2 weeks had been dropped.
It was among the many options we were considering but noting the objections from our stakeholders, we will no longer propose a two-week break,
he said.
In a TV news report last month, San Antonio said that the department was considering extending the school year and shortening the 2 months break into just 2 weeks. Upon the announcement, DepEd drew flak and criticisms from netizens, including teachers and youth groups.
OTHER STORIES:
DepEd, on Tuesday, adjusted the current school calendar moving the last day of classes to July 10, originally from June 11. However, officials aren’t yet sure if the changes in the school calendar would shorten the vacation break.
The opening of classes in the next school year is still under deliberation,
said Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan.
