An inventory of seized mobile phones and computers is being carried out by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) from several ports all over the country to supplement the donation it made to the Department of Education’s (DepEd) blended or distance learning program.
Rey Leonardo Guerrero, Customs Commissioner of the BOC told Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III that the BOC has stored seized smuggled mobile phones at the Manila International Container Port and the Port of Manila. This is in reply to the Department of Finance chief’s inquiry whether BOC still has computers and gadgets that they can donate to DepEd.
We are just conducting an inventory, and seeking clearance from the National Telecommunications Commission [NTC] if these can be donated,
Guerrero said during a recent DOF Executive Committee (Execom) meeting.

According to Guerrero, the BOC still needs to first secure the clearance of NTC for the donation of the gadgets since they are still classified as regular items.
In late January, 198 units of laptops and 4,480 smartphones was formally turned over by BOC to Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones. The devices were seized during a joint operation of BOC conducted with personnel of the Clark Development Corp (CDC).
Dominguez praised the BOC for continually modernizing their processes and intensifying their effort to combat illicit trades despite the challenge brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also guaranteed that the DOF and its attached agencies will support Briones and DepEd’s effort to ensure that Filipino learners continue their education with its blended learning program despite the pandemic.
