The Department of Education’s (DepEd) proposal to resume face-to-face classes has been rejected by President Rodrigo Duterte despite the calls of groups to prioritize and ensure students and teachers’ health safety if allowed to return to school.
Earlier, Education Secretary Leonor Briones made a suggestion to reopen schools and allow face-to-face classes as learners, according to her, have wanted to go back to school and learn with their friends as they were in lock down at home for almost a year. On, Thursday, DepEd again made a pitch about it despite the lack of classrooms, sanitary facilities and health service in public schools.
However, in a regular briefing on Monday, Palace spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte called him last night and said that face-to-face learning won’t be possible at the moment and hopes that it might resume by August when vaccinations in the country have started.
Tumawag po ang Presidente kagabi sa akin at sabi niya, ayaw po niyang malagay sa panganib ang buhay ng ating mag-aaral at mga guro habang wala pa pong nababakunahan sa bansa,
he added.
Roque also said that the President expressed hope that face-to-face classes may be allowed in areas where the COVID-19 cases are low.
