DepEd to implement stringent measures on limited face-to-face classes if approved

Education Secretary Leonor Briones said that the Department of Education (DepEd) will assure that stringent measures will be implemented in order to ensure the safety of students and teachers if President Duterte will approve the pilot testing of limited face-to-face classes.

On Thursday, Briones said in the press briefing of Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Harry Roque, Jr., that DepEd will present at least four policy choices to the President that will serve as a basis for him to decide whether the pilot testing will ensue.

OTHET STORIES:

The dry run of limited face-to-face classes was proposed by DepEd in December, which President Duterte initially approved. However, it was later postponed due to the detection of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) UK variant in the country.

Briones said that as for the moment, they are preparing for the time when the President will lift the postponement of the pilot testing. She also added that the conditions for the possible dry run of face-to-face classes will be very strict.
First, we need the consent of the local governments, they have to agree to it because that is their territory and they have investments in the schools. Parents’ written consent will also be required to allow their children to participate in the conducted limited face-to-face classes,
she explained.

Briones also expressed that not all facilities of DepEd are perfect for the pilot testing. With that, an assessment of the schools that will participate in the dry run will be conducted by the Department of Health (DoH) and the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging and Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID).

Without preempting the President’s decision, Briones said that DepEd will constantly update President Duterte on the current situation and developments and how the new COVID-19 variant is being managed in Metro Manila.

She added that DepEd will also update the President on the recent studies on the effect of COVID-19 among children.
