Briones says ‘balance’ needed between academic ease and school year extension

Recently, the Department of Education (DepEd) has announced that they are considering to extend the school year by shortening the two-month summer break of students into just two weeks.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones explained her position on the matter when she was asked and said that a balanced is needed for the calls of academic ease and the impact of a prolonged absence of classes.
We are very careful in calibrating itong bakasyon. Kasi nakabakasyon na sila ng anim na buwan, magdagdag na naman tayo ng bakasyon,
said Briones. She continued to ask if adding more vacation would help the calls of youths for academic ease.

She added that if extending vacation will help achieve academic ease and if calls for academic freeze have quieted down, then the department might consider doing it, but not for too long.

When the DepEd announced that they are considering to extend the school year, many students and teachers have expressed their disapproval saying that learners and educators are already burned out with the situation.

A suggestion came from the Alliance of Concerned Teachers urges that the department should rather concentrate their effort in easing the workload of both teachers and students.
The difficulties of many students in keeping up with the lessons while both learners and teachers are burned out is a clear proof that the current curriculum and the over-all learning design being implemented are not sufficiently attuned to their real situation under the health and economic crisis,
ACT Secretary General Raymond Basilio said in a statement.

The group added that it is as if the teachers are treated by DepEd as tireless workhorses, while they themselves also have experienced stresses and economic crises to their families brought by the pandemic.

The proposal has also been rejected by The National Union of Students in the Philippines. They said that that using gadgets poses economic problems and that the distance learning setup has relentlessly affected the mental health of learners.
Pagod na pagod at sadlak na sa hirap ang mga estudyante dulot ng palpak na distance learning!
NUSP President Jandeil Roperos said.

Exasperations and frustrations expressed by netizens to DepEd through angry comments have also trended in the social media.
