Recto questions restriction of face-to-face classes in COVID-19 free areas

On Thursday, Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto is asking why learners of Covid-19 free areas are still forbidden to attend physical classes when non-essential activities are already being allowed even the presence of the virus.

While the Senate tackled the DepEd's proposed P563-billion 2021 budget in plenary, Recto said that why are they allowing people to go to restaurants but education which is considered as one of the most essential, is not allowed.
What about in areas na walang COVID naman? Why not just allow students to enter, go back to the classrooms?
he asked.

Senator Pia Cayetano also agreed with Recto, saying that she would even allow his 10-year-old son to attend physical classes provided that the number of students is limited and that the environment is safe.

"These things can be done but we have not moved forward," she said noting that the DepEd has an open mind about the resumption of physical classes but still needs to get the approval from a task force on COVID-19.

Cayetano said that some areas would be able to do face-to-face classes citing her experience going to villages which are not accessible to vehicles. She said that children are playing together and the teacher is their neighbor, and yet they are not allowed to go to school.

Philippines and Kenya are the only 2 countries that have not resumed face-to-face classes, however, some countries are already reconsidering the policy due to increasing number of Covid-19 cases, said Cayetano.
