Edu. Sec. Briones urges schools to create own plans in dealing issues brought by super typhoon

Education Secretary Leonor Briones are encouraging the schools to develop their own initiatives in facing the challenges brought by the tropical cyclone instead of waiting orders from the central office of the Department of Education (DepEd).

Halimbawa, nabasa ang module, siguro hindi naman susulat ang [schools] superintendent na, 'basa ang module namin.' Maghanap sila ng paraan. Siguro ibibilad nila, 'yung iba pinaplantsa. Hindi na sila uutusan ng circular galing sa central office para sabihin kung ano ang gagawin,

Briones said.

The department is leaving it up to its local offices and divisions to work around the issues in their areas brought by the typhoon.

DepEd Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio added that those extremely affected by the typhoon, such as in Bicol, would be given the chance to study from resources that were previously used by other students.

Itong mga nasa Bicol… bibigyan sila ng pagkakataon na matuto rin gamit ‘yung mga self-learning resources na ginamit ng kamag-aral nila,

he said.

Briones gave assurances that the production of self-learning modules (SLMs) will not be affected though some schools were damaged due to the onslaught of Super Typhoon Rolly (Goni).

I don't think it will affect our module production since we already produced the learning modules for the 1st quarter,

Briones said.

The remarks of Briones about letting the schools to solve on their own the problem of damaged learning modules caused by Super Typhoon Rolly earned a lot of criticism online. On Tuesday, Briones said in a press briefing that DepEd is already working with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to help the schools that have been heavily affected by the typhoon.
