DepEd welcomes in-kind aids for typhoon-affected students, non-teaching staff

With the recent onslaught of typhoon Rolly and Ulysses, the Department of Education (DepEd) welcomes in-kind donations for the students and  personnel who were greatly affected by the typhoons.

We are encouraging private individuals and our partners that want to donate to the victims of the typhoons to donate in-kind, [since] we are refraining from receiving monetary donations,

said DepEd Undersecretary for Legislative Affairs, External Partnerships, and Project Management Service Tonisito M.C. Umali.

Also, the department said that it is better to directly drop off the donations to the regional or division offices for convenience and no need to bring it to the Central Office.

On the recent data of DepEd Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS), there are 20,649 schools which classes remained suspended affecting 11,273,091 enrollees due to typhoon “Ulysses.” And 3,813 schools are still suspended affecting 1,616,670 learners due to typhoon “Rolly.”

DepEd Region IV-A encouraged school division offices to initiate in-kind donation drive to generate goods such as mats, blankets, towels, pillows, clothes, toiletries, detergents, soap, and other food items which will be sent to affected students and personnel.

DepEd also reported that 352 schools in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), National Capital Region (NCR), Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, and Eastern Visayas are being used as evacuation centers due to “Ulysses.” A total of 286 schools are also used by the evacuees in Region IV-A and V.

Basing from the latest data from DepEd, typhoon Ulysses damaged 1,581 schools while 1,982 schools were damaged by typhoon Rolly.
