DepEd estimates P3.6B for the restoration of over 1,000 schools damaged by super typhoon Rolly

The Department of Education (DepEd) recorded more than 1,000 public schools damaged by the world's strongest typhoon so far of 2020, typhoon Rolly. The department said that it needs at least P3.6 billion for reconstruction and rehabilitation of schools.


As of Thursday, there are 1,033 schools damaged in 41 divisions in the National Capital Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, and Eastern Visayas.

DepEd said that there were:
  • 1,063 totally damaged classrooms
  • 1,911 partially damaged classrooms (major), and
  • 3,701 partially damaged classrooms (minor)
Furthermore, DepEd also reported non-infrastructure damage in 26 divisions in eight regions. A total of 381 schools reported:
  • 18, 078 damaged school furniture
  • 122, 783 damaged learning materials, and
  • 6, 121 damaged computer sets
Classes in all levels in Catanduanes and Legazpi City are still suspended.

DepEd engineers and DRRM coordinators will be mobilized to the affected areas to conduct the detailed assessment of infrastructure and non-infrastructure damages for the purpose of determining the cost of rehabilitation and recovery interventions.
