DepEd estimates about P10-B to restore over 3,000 schools damaged by Rolly, Ulysses

During the onslaught of typhoons Rolly and Ulysses, both leaves with hundreds of schools damaged. The Department of Education (DepEd) estimates that at least P10 billion is needed in order to reconstruct, rehabilitate or repair more than 3,000 school damages.

As of November 18, Super typhoon Rolly, which came in early November, damaged to at least 1,982 schools in CAR, NCR, Regions I, II, III, IV-A, IV-B, V and VIII.  And as of November 20 typhoon Ulysses damaged reached up to 1,799 schools in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) National Capital Region (NCR), Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, and Bicol.


Combined estimated cost for rehabilitation of the 3,781 schools is more than P10.2 billion or P3.6 billion for Ulysses and P6.6 billion for Rolly. the department clarified that the estimated cost are based on the initial data from the Rapid Assessment of Damages Report (RADaR) which are still subject to validation and detailed assessment.

Also there are 329 schools in Urdaneta City, Cagayan, Tuguegarao City, Cauayan City, Isabela, Ilagan City, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Santiago City, and Camarines Sur are flooded due to typhoon Ulysses.

Based on the available reports, DepEd said that the back-to-back typhoons are affecting 12.8 million enrollees as classes in over 24,000 schools in the battered regions remain suspended.
