Sen. Gatchalian calls on DepEd to employ more personnel to lower working hours of teachers

On Thursday, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, who chairs the Senate committee on basic education, arts and culture, called for employing more non-teaching personnel at the Department of Education (DepEd) to help reduce the working hours of teachers. He said the government must allocate more funds for the DepEd to relieve teachers from non-teaching responsibilities.

In Section 13 of Republic Act 4670 states that teachers “shall not be required to render more than 6 hours of actual classroom teaching a day,” and that those who will render overtime work must be compensated.

Gatchalian said there is a need to address the 6 hours requirement for teaching because it has also impacts to learner outcomes.
If teachers are overburdened with non-teaching activities, talagang mauubos ‘yung oras nila sa ibang mga activities other than teaching.
Senator Imee Marcos strongly supports the proposal, saying that hiring more non-teaching personnel will enrich the experience of the children and it liberates teachers from non-teaching chores.

Education Undersecretary Jesus Mateo said that they had already come up with the manpower requirements. Also, the department is crafting guidelines on the distribution of teaching load which will be issued soon.
