Pres. Duterte announces July 17 yearly as 'National Physiatry Day'

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has declared July 17 of every year as "National Physiatry Day" to raise awareness on the practice of rehabilitation medicine.

On Thursday, Duterte signed the Proclamation No. 1017, which tasks the Department of Health (DOH) and relevant professional associations to identify programs and activities for the annual event.

In 2018, the World Health Organization revealed that musculoskeletal conditions are the second largest contributor to disability in persons worldwide. These conditions can cause reduced ability to participate in social roles, early retirement from work, and decreased accumulated wealth.

The President also pointed out that stroke and low back pain are among the leading causes of acquired disability in the Philippines, and according to the proclamation, the number of patients undergoing rehabilitation has “greatly increased” in the last four decades.

Duterte ordered the Department of Health (DOH) to coordinate with relevant non-government organizations and professional associations regarding promotion and the identification of programs, projects and activities for the annual celebration. Also, he encouraged cooperation with the local government units and the private sector.

The increasing number of Filipinos undergoing rehabilitation medicine has prompted the need to raise awareness on Physiatry.

Given the growing number of patients with rehabilitation needs in the country, there is a need to strengthen support in providing access and affordable medication and rehabilitation to them by raising awareness and encouraging collaboration among relevant stakeholders, 

the President said in Proclamation No. 1017 signed on Thursday but made public Friday.

Physiatrists, specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of people with medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, and heart.

Physiatry, also known as physical medicine and rehabilitation, is the branch of medicine that aims to enhance, restore and optimize function and quality of life, and prevent the loss of ability to function of patients with physical impairments and disabilities.
