COVID-19 takes the life of a pregnant teacher after colleagues threw her a surprise baby party

A pregnant school teacher has died from coronavirus three days after she attended a surprise baby shower hosted by co-workers in Anapolis, Brazil.

Camila Graciano, 31, had been very careful because of her pregnancy and had been staying home to shield herself and her baby against the danger posed by the pandemic. However, she came in contact with someone infected with coronavirus when her co-workers threw her a baby shower in Anapolis, Brazilian outlet, according to reports.

Her brother, Daniel Hélio Ambrósio said that a woman who attended the party in Anápolis had no symptoms at that time, but later fell sick and notified all of the attendees. He said,

Unfortunately, my sister was one of the people who were infected,

Graciano, who was then eight months pregnant, was rushed three days later to the hospital. Her family struggled to find an open hospital bed for her, but eventually placed her in a specialist COVID-19 maternity ward on August 19. She gave birth at Santa Casa hospital via an emergency cesarean section. The baby was born prematurely but was otherwise reported healthy. Ambrósio said, 

Thank God my niece is showing good signs, she’s breathing alone in the incubator, and doesn’t need oxygen,

According to the statement of the hospital, Graciano had a history of hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Despite the severity of Graciano’s condition, the family had high hopes that she would recover and she was even showing signs of significant improvement.

After the birth, my sister showed significant improvement...The doctors even sent us a message saying, ‘Listen, have faith, because her lungs are improving, the heartbeat is improving (and) her blood pressure is improving, 

Ambrósio recalled.

However, the new mom’s health began to rapidly deteriorate, and she was pronounced dead on August 22, the reports said.

There are over 3.9 million COVID-19 cases in Brazil as of September 2. According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 122,500 people have died in the country due to the disease.
