Nograles said that the four million children who have not yet been enrolled have been given another month and a half to enroll.
I hope parents will use the change afforded by the delay in school opening to enroll their children.
Rest assured that I will monitor the implementation of the DepEd’s distance learning system to ensure support for your children.
According to Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan, of those who did not enroll, 2.75 million students used to go to private schools and more than 1 million students who attended public school have not registered for this coming school year.

An estimated 380,000 learners from kindergarten to senior high school levels transferred to public schools from private learning institutions.

As of August, the total number of enrollees for SY 2020-2021 has reached 23,910,974 nationwide (86.03% of SY 2019-2020) for Kindergarten to Grade 12, including ALS and non-graded learners with disabilities.

The data showed that 21,971,428 learners have enrolled in public schools (97.33% of SY 2019) and 1,893,886 registered in private schools (43.98% of SY 2019). DepEd is still anticipating an increase in enrollment figures as reports from the field continue to come in.

Nograles reiterated his call for the education department to familiarize parents with their new roles under the distance learning method. He said that Parents are de facto teachers under the new system. Parents must be oriented on how they can facilitate their children’s learning experience and monitor their progress.

He also expressed hope that the DepEd would use the postponement of school opening wisely.
Issues like delivery of learning materials and support to teachers and learners should be seamlessly done now that the DepEd has more time to do it,
he added.
