The approved design is a steel frame with Plexiglas or plastic soldered in the center of the motorcycle and a backpack- like contraption to be worn by the driver.

It was July 10 when the government’s task force allowed back-riding for couples as long as they installed a protective barriers on the motorcycle. The installation of protective barrier was extended to July 26.

Revilla said many citizens speak up that the installed barrier is preventing them from balancing and properly maneuver the motorcycle. He also added that many citizens are in tight situation because of the pandemic and cannot afford a good barrier. It is why many couples just made an improvised barrier which exposes them to accidents.

Riders are exposed to hazards especially when installed barriers are only improvised. Its either not installed properly or materials used are substandard, too light or too heavy.

Revilla, also a motorcycle rider, pointed out that several engineers and experts are opposing the mandatory installation of dividers in motorcycles “because it will become a question of safety, aerodynamics and maneuverability for riders.”

He suggested that the IATF conduct a “comprehensive consultation” among motorcycle manufacturers and experts to come up with better guidelines that will protect motorcycle riders from obtaining COVID-19 and at the same time prevent road mishaps.

It's only two weeks since it was implemented, several accidents have already been reported.

Revilla added that we shouldn't wait for serious accidents to happen before doing something. The barrier should be helpful and not cause more problems.
