Over 19.5 million students in PH enrolled for the coming school year

There are over 19.5 million students enrolled in both public and private schools nationwide for the upcoming school year 2020-2021 this August 24. Confirmed by the Department of Ed­u­ca­tion (DepEd) on Monday

DepED data showed that as of July 13, the the total number of enrollees for this school year has reached 19, 534, 836 nationwide for Kinder­garten to Grade 12, including Alternative Learning System (ALS) and non-graded learners with dis­abil­i­ties.

18,543,788 learners enrolled in public schools and 968,154 registered in private schools.

DepEd first announced that the registration period for this school year is scheduled from June 1-30. But, the to accommodate more students they extended the enrollment period till July 15.

Remote enrollment system was also implemented due to the virus pandemic situation in the country. Teachers asked the help of the Local Government Unit to help with the enrollment.

Even before the enrollment period was announced, DepEd had already forecasted a decrease in participation rate, specially in private schools.

Current data showed that there are:

• 1,297,737 learn­ers en­rolled in Kinder­garten 9,664,897 in Ele­men­tary
• 6,187,967 in Ju­nior High School (JHS)
• 2,101,375 in Se­nior High School (SHS)

Included in the latest enrollment data are:

• 50,367 learn­ers with dis­abil­i­ties
• 232,493 un­der the ALS.

This year’s en­roll­ment had teach­ers or class advisers tak­ing the lead in call­ing their stu­dents from Grade 1 to Grade 12 last year to get their in­for­ma­tion and place it on the Learner In­for­ma­tion Sys­tem (LIS).

The DepEd’s units are still busy preparing the self-learning modules for all subjects and grade levels.

Meanwhile, regional offices are adjusting the distance learning programs to make them more suitable to the situation on the ground.

The DepEd decided to shift to distance learning for the coming school year to comply with the President's directive for schools to postpone face-to-face classes until a coronavirus vaccine becomes available.
